Jacksonville Periodontist’s Patients Experience Gum Surgery-Without Pain
“Dental Surgery: No Longer Something to Fear with New Pain-Free Laser Procedure”
The American Dental Association says most people would rather lose a tooth than get gum surgery, but a new procedure is changing that. Periodontist Dr. Gary Perlman announced that he’s restoring gums back to health with a pain-free procedure called Laser -assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP). Even more remarkable, his x-rays show his patients are also experiencing bone regrowth.
“Incredible as it may seem, we are seeing dramatic improvement even in cases of very severe periodontal disease and where teeth would normally require extraction.” Says Dr. Perlman, “LANAP works to restore healthy tissues and regenerate bone even in these worst-case scenarios. ”
Eighty percent of American adults have some form of Periodontal disease (often referred to as gum disease) by the time they are 45 years of age and most don’t even know it. The disease damages teeth, gums and jawbone, affecting your ability to chew and speak in addition to decreasing the aesthetics of your smile. Alarmingly only 3% of patients ever receive treatment for periodontal disease.
Reasons for patients not getting treatment for periodontal disease are many and varied. Because periodontal disease often does not have any symptoms, many patients do not know they have it.
Once they discover they have it, many are not aware of the seriousness of the disease which can threaten not only oral health, but overall health severely. The outcome of not getting treated has been associated with making systemic diseases worse and has been linked to heart attacks, pre-term babies, low-weight babies, stillbirths, strokes, and diabetes.
One of the biggest reasons patients cite for not seeking treatment once they know they have periodontal disease is fear. Many have been afraid that the only treatment option available to them is traditional surgery that involves the painful process of cutting the gums, scraping the teeth, sewing the gums and then waiting for slow recovery.
Dr. Gary Perlman, who received his dental degree from Emory University of Dentistry, completed his graduate study in Periodontics from Boston University, and has received extensive training in LANAP from Dr. Perlman says, “LANAP is a huge leap forward in treatment. There are no incisions. There are no stitches. There is no swelling and no bleeding. In today’s world we want to get the best results in as little time as possible. LANAP is cutting edge treatment that allows the patient to get healthy, to get treatment, but in very little time.”
How effective is LANAP treatment on preventing tooth loss over time? Perlman says, “In my office, I have used LANAP to treat over 175 patients. Most of my patients have experienced the same tremendous results from the procedure, namely, a healthy mouth with evidence of bone regeneration and resolution of periodontal disease. Patients experience no pain and little to no recovery with results like I’ve never seen in my 27 years as a periodontist.”
Dr. Perlman’s patients concur. One week after Dr. Perlman performed laser surgery on his gums, Joseph Nemeth says that he was “totally amazed at the process and that he had an “outstanding experience.” Nemeth says, “Going into the procedure I was extremely scared,” but just one week later he says he has “no pain and no discomfort.”
